Since taking over the Chargers program in 2016, Coach Ben Wharton has helped lead the Chargers to two district regular season championships, one district tournament championship, and two state tournament berths, advancing to the Elite 8 in 2018. Wharton has also twice been named District Coach of the Year and coached John Rhodes, a 3 time all state athlete and two time Mr. Baseball Finalist.
Wharton spent two years playing independent minor league baseball, first for the Bay Area Toros in 2007 and then for the Reno Silver Sox in 2008. After retiring from professional baseball, Wharton started his coaching career at Covenant College. During his time at Covenant, Wharton earned his masters degree in Sports Management, coached two All-Americans, and helped lead the Scots to their first NCAA tournament berth in 2014.
Wharton graduated from Bryan College with a degree in history. During his time at Bryan as an outfielder, Wharton earned all-region honors in 2006 and 2007, led the NAIA in stolen bases in 2006, earned a Gold Glove in 2007, and still holds the career record in stolen bases. A 2003 graduate of CCS, Wharton earned all state baseball honors in 2003 and was a pitcher and a shortstop on the Charger's 2002 and 2003 state tournament teams.
In addition to coaching baseball, Wharton teaches middle school history at CCS. Wharton and his wife, Stephanie, have three children. The Wharton family lives on Lookout Mountain and attends Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church.
